Zander fishing in the river Aulne is going from strength to strength. In the not too distant past you would hear stories of big zander being caught but locals would put it down to rumour and speculation as this species was not officially introduced to the river. This means that you will be catching totally wild fish with a population that has increased exponentially over recent years.

to his name

The 2007 season saw many big zander caught from the locks of the Nantes to Brest canal system where salmon are normally targeted. If you are a coarse fisherman who fancies a change in species or a lure fisherman who wants to target a an exciting and strong predator species, then this fish is for you!

Soft lures with twister or paddle tails work well for zander. Sam recommends that you also rig up a predator trace when fishing for zander as you may encounter a pike strike in the process.

season with a fine 6 kilo zander

Pike, zander (see pics below), and perch love weir pools. On the Nantes-to-Brest canal sections of the rivers, Hyere and Aulne, there are an abundance of good weir pools to choose from. Sam has details on hand to help you make an informed decision depending on the time of year you come and fish. Zander over 6 kilos were caught last year, many of which were caught by coarse fishermen seeking a bit of a change. Pike and zander season on the Aulne runs starts in January for about 3 weeks, then their is a pause from February to mid May (to protect spawning stock) when the season starts again and continues to the end of December. Please remember that the minimum keeper length for both Pike and Zander in the canal is 60cm.
