French to English Fisherman's Glossary

Trout (and Salmon) season in Brittany starts on
the second Saturday of March 2011

Near my home there are some clear-flowing rivers which are not only picturesque but also hold some of the most beautiful brown trout (not to mention salmon) in France.

Rivers like the Aulne sauvage, Squiriou, Ster Goanez, Odet, Steïr, Jet, and Goyen (not to mention countless feeder streams) in Finistère, and a bit further afield, the Léguer, Jaudy and Trieux rivers in Côte d'Armor, will enchant visiting fly fishermen as they strategically cast a dry fly, emerger or parahute nymph along rock-strewn or sandy substrates to entice these wily finned creatures.

You can start fly fishing for these feisty browns or stream-run salmon parr from mid March to mid September.

Dry fly/Emerger Fly Fishing Equipment

Visiting anglers should bring stream fly rods ranging from 6 to 8 feet, with a 7 foot rod being the most versatile in our rivers. Don't be afraid to 'overline' your rod, i.e. matching it with a double taper line that is a couple of AFTMA weight classes above the rod rating.

For example, I use a stream rod that is rated at 2/3 which casts brilliantly when matched with a 4 weight double taper fly line. This overlining allows the angler to load the rod without having lots of fly line outside the rod tip without sacrificing presentation. Bring chest waders so you can take advantage of every inch of water. Wading will allow you to enjoy local wildlife ranging from damsel and dragon flies to otters and local muskrats. There will also be times when grazing cows will come up curiously to check out how your day is going.

Fly fishing certainly does lead
people to the most beautiful
 of watery places
