Professional fishing guide, Sam Davis, with 2 kilo schoolie sea bass caught near Kerity.

2 kilo sea bass 'schoolie' he took a storm thundermac

Catching specimen bass like the one held by professional fishing guide, Sam Davis (pic above) is not for the faint hearted. You normally have to navigate big swells, waves and dangerous rocks, so be prepared and fish with those who put your safety first. For those anglers who are new to Brittany's waters, one of the best ways to learn how to fish for bass is to fish a rock pile during a decent swell from high to low water.

You will see the crashing action of the waves on the rocks become more pronounced and the white water produced on the lee side of the rocks becomes more concentrated. This is ground zero for sea bass in Brittany. Large flies, plugs, spoons, and Sam's favourites, storm thundermacs and slug-gos work well in this situation.

Easily matched by Christian's big prize

Whether found lurking off inshore beaches, rocks and estuaries, offshore wrecks and reefs, or running in big shoals in breaking waves, Brittany has its fair share of big sea bass. Sam has broken through the language and local-knowledge barrier to provide visiting anglers with clear information so they too can connect with these wonderful sea-predators. The season for sea bass normally starts in mid/late march and runs to the end of the year. For sea bass you can fly or lure fish from the shores of many rocky bays near or in the Bay of Brest, fish local estuaries from a boat, or simply go offshore in search rocky fish-holding structure where the big sea bass can be found hounding sandeels, mackerel, shrimp and other prey species. All can be arranged for your fishing pleasure. No license is required to sea fish and tackle can be provided with advance notice.
