Why Salmon Fish in Brittany?

Many anglers pay huge sums of money to chase after these migratory marvels in Russia, Iceland and Alaska, and fair enough! Although we are not here to compete with the big boys of salmon holidays, we do offer something unique and special for the budget-conscience salmon angler by offering them a chance to catch a lovely 'springer' or grilse in a traditional Breton/French environment without resorting to an 'Oceans 11, 12, or 13 type raid' on the bank. Take advantage of flying over for 'peanuts' with one of the cheap air carriers like Flybe or Ryanair, (car hire is available at Brest Airport) or via a Short Ferry Break to enjoy a weekend or longer of salmon fishing. Salmon licenses are sold on site for your convenience. After being armed by Sam with some local river/angling information and a fly or spinning rod, you can immediately start enjoying some fishing solitude. Sam is also availabile if you want a professional guide by your side as well.

The 2008 salmon season started on March 8th. 6 spring salmon were caught on opening day!

The TAC or total allowable catch for spring salmon on the river Aulne (Nantes to Brest canal section, Chateaulin district) is 44 fish.

Visiting Anglers are spoiled for choice as wild streams, rivers, the salmon Weir System of the river Aulne.

Salmon Fishing Season 2007 (2008 info coming soon)

The French fishing authorities have divided the salmon fishing season into different fishing periods with different restrictions attributed to each particular period. To the non-French angler these restrictions may seem odd but are in place to better manage future stocks of the Atlantic salmon in Breton rivers. With that said, visiting anglers have a good chance of catching that 'silver bar'. For those keen salmon anglers who book a stay with us during periods 1 & 3, there are plenty of alternative fishing/outdoor opportunities on those 'salmon off days'.

Period 1 (8 March to 15 June Inclusive)

  • Fly, artificial lure and bait fishing (e.g. worm and prawn) authorised without restriction as to hook type and number.

  • Fishing for salmon authorised on the following days only: Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Wednesday.
  • Minimum keeper length is 50 cm. This is standard rule throughout the salmon season.

Period 2 (16 June to 31 July Inclusive)

  • Fly fishing allowed with single hook flies (i.e. no double or treble hooks).

  • Spinning allowed with lures mounted with single hook only.

  • Bait fishing is also allowed as long as the bait-hook mount is composed of a single hook.

  • Anglers are allowed to fish any day of the week.

  • Anglers who catch a salmon longer than 70 cm are obliged to return it to the river.

Period 3 (1 August to 21 September Inclusive)

  • Fly fishing allowed with single hook flies (i.e. no double or treble hooks).

  • Spinning allowed with lures mounted with single hook.

  • Spin fly fishing with plastic bubble float (i.e. Buldo) is authorised as long as the attached flies have single hooks.

  • Anglers are allowed to fish any day of the week.
