Over-wintered Rainbow
trout caught from St Michel in Late May 2008 |
Just a 25-minute drive north our home,
Stang Korvenn, is Brittany's premiere 500 hectare (1250 acre) rainbow
trout reservoir. This peaty, whisky-coloured lake is stocked each
year with hardy local rainbows ranging from 1 to 2.5 kilos which are
raised at the nearby salmon and trout fish farm at La Favot. Starting
in 2008 and continuing in 2009
in addition to the stock of good average fish, there will be a head
of bigger fish (e.g. 5 kg class) added to the lake (see recent
pic of Terry below for proof).

fly-caught rainbow
As any seasoned angler will tell you,
rainbows in reservoirs tend to fight harder than their smaller
stillwater cousins, and you may catch the cream of the stockies, the
beautifully-finned, 'over-wintered' fish, not to mention the
occasional wild brown trout which may enter the lake via various
feeder streams.

St Michel Rainbow
8 lbs and 2 feet long! |
In comparison to UK reservoirs, St Michel
rainbows receives extremely little fishing pressure. Fly fishing on
the eastern bank at 'Camping', for example, can yield excellent
catches as this area allows the wading fly angler to stalk a large
area for rising fish or sub-surface feeders. However to experience
this lake in full, Sam offers boat-based fishing outings to those who
yearn to catch these fine rainbows 'loch-style'. To fish St Michel,
licensed anglers need only purchase a fishing stamp from Sam in
addition to their regular or holiday fishing permit. The rainbow
season starts from mid March
and continues to the end of December.
Good fishing!
