This picturesque
abandoned quarry with good water quality
and vegetation creates
and ideal home for
the
black bass
Fishing for ole 'bucket mouth' (black or
largemouth bass as they are known in the USA, even though they are
classified, not as a true bass, but as a sunfish by fish taxonomists)
in Sam's home waters of his native South Carolina was a piece of cake
to say the least as this indigenous species could be found in waters
ranging from small creeks and drainage ditches to mega-acre
reservoirs. All you needed was a licence, some simple tackle and
bait, and the bass fishing world was your oyster.

This handsome black bass
succumbed to a black dog nobbler
variant. After
to the protective vegetation
jutting from the
stone walls, the
takes started to come fast and sharp.
However, fishing for black bass in Brittany
can be a frustrating affair with information about where to catch
these fish being thin on the ground, shrouded in secrecy or myth or
just plain wrong. This, of course, can be compounded by not
understanding French. As of late last year, I was informed by a good
friend that the bass were still in this pond thriving!
